History of Chambersburg Mall
How the Mall Started
Chambersburg Mall first opened its doors in 1982. It was built by a company called Crown American. When it first opened, its main stores were Hess's and Gee Bee. There was also a Carmike Cinemas movie theater.
A few years later, in 1985, another big store called The Bon-Ton joined the mall. Then, in 1991, Sears moved its store from downtown Chambersburg to the mall.
Changes to Main Stores
In the early 1990s, Hess's stores closed down. The space at Chambersburg Mall was then taken over by JCPenney. JCPenney also moved from a different shopping area in downtown Chambersburg.
Gee Bee changed its name to Value City in 1992. However, Value City closed in 2008. After that, the space became a Burlington store.
New Owners and Challenges
In 2003, a company called Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust (PREIT) bought many malls from Crown American, including Chambersburg Mall.
Around 2009, the mall faced some challenges. A report from U.S. News & World Report said it was one of the "most endangered" malls in the United States. This meant it wasn't doing very well. At that time, about 62 percent of the stores were open.
In 2012, the mall was put up for sale again. By November 2013, it was officially sold to Mason Asset Management for $8.8 million.
Recent Store Closures
Many big stores have closed at the mall in recent years. Sears closed its doors in 2014. That space is now used by Black Rose Antiques & Collectibles. This store sells antiques and collectibles.
JCPenney closed in July 2015. Then, in August 2018, The Bon-Ton also closed. This happened because the entire Bon-Ton chain went out of business. Both the JCPenney and Bon-Ton spaces are still empty.
On January 18, 2019, Burlington closed its store at the mall. This left Black Rose Antiques & Collectibles as the only remaining main store for a while.
The Mall Today
At its busiest in the 1990s and early 2000s, Chambersburg Mall had as many as 75 stores. But over time, the number of stores has shrunk. This is partly because new shopping centers opened nearby. Also, more people started buying things online.
By the late 2010s, the mall had only about 30 stores and services. This included Black Rose Antiques & Collectibles and an AMC Classic movie theater. As of 2021, there are only about 7 stores left. Other spaces are now used by military recruitment centers, an escape room, a martial arts school, an art gallery, and a massage place.
