Chamintney "Mittie" Stovall Thomas (1899–1979) was an amazing American writer, teacher, musician, and church leader. She lived in Russellville, Alabama. Her most famous book is Hear the Lambs A-Cryin. This book is a historical novel about the lives of Black communities in the southern United States during the Great Depression. In 1986, she was honored by being chosen for the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame.

Her Famous Book: Hear the Lambs A-Cryin
Mittie Thomas published her historical novel, Hear the Lambs A-Cryin, in 1975. She wrote this book based on her own experiences. It tells stories from her time volunteering in the Black community during the Great Depression.
When the book came out, a magazine called Library Journal reviewed it. They said that Thomas had an "authentic ear for dialect." This means she was very good at writing how people really spoke. The review also said her book truly showed the "lore, the mores, the deep family attachments, and the inherent strength of her protagonists." This means the book brought to life the traditions, customs, strong family bonds, and inner strength of her main characters.
Community and Church Work
Besides writing, Mittie Thomas was also very active in her community. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Russellville. Through her church, she volunteered to help people in communities that needed support. She also helped to start several new churches.
