Community News and Plans

In 2006, the people of Champion Forest faced a big decision. The Raveneaux Country Club, which was nearby, wanted to build many new homes. They planned to build up to 500 townhouses and condominiums on their land. The club wanted to keep the rest of its property as a golf course.

The people living in Champion Forest did not agree with this plan. They thought it would bring too many new buildings to the area.

How the Community Responded

Robert Eckels, who was the county judge for Harris County at the time, also lived near Champion Forest. He did not support the country club's building plan.

Judge Eckels asked the county's right-of-way division to look into something called eminent domain. This is when the government can buy private land for public use, even if the owner doesn't want to sell. He wanted to see how much it would cost for the county to buy about 288 acres (1.17 km2) from the country club. The idea was to turn this land into a park for everyone to enjoy.
