Chan Chich Site facts for kids
The Chan Chich Site is an ancient Maya city located in Belize. It's about 4 kilometers east of the border with Guatemala, right along Chan Chich Creek. This old city was used by the Maya people for a very long time, from around 800 BC to 850 AD.
Archaeologists have been studying Chan Chich for many years. The Chan Chich Archaeological Project (CCAP) and the Belize Estates Archaeological Survey Team (BEAST) started exploring the site in the 1990s. During their work, they even found an ancient tomb! More recently, in 2014, new studies helped create a better map and understanding of the site.

In 2014, archaeologists wanted to carefully study the site. Their main goal was to make a very accurate map and model of it. This helps them understand how the city was laid out and how people lived there.
What's Next for Chan Chich?
The CCAP team said their work in 2014 was a big success! They plan to study the buildings and structures even more closely. They also want to learn how these buildings connect to ancient Maya kings and queens. This will help us understand more about the powerful people who once lived in Chan Chich.
