Chandler Rathfon Post (born 1881, died 1959) was an American art expert and university professor. He taught at Harvard University for many years, from 1909 to 1950. He became a "professor emeritus," which means he retired but was still honored by the university. Post was especially interested in Renaissance art from Spain and Italy, and he studied the meaning behind images (called iconography). He wrote a famous series of books called A History of Spanish Painting.

Early Life and Education
Chandler Rathfon Post was born on December 14, 1881, in Detroit, Michigan. His parents were Anne M. Rathfon and William R. Post.
Studying at Harvard
Post went to Harvard University for his studies. Some of his classmates included Franklin D. Roosevelt, who later became a US President. In 1904, Post earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts, in Spanish literature.
After graduating, he traveled to Athens, Greece. There, he studied Greek literature at the American School of Classical Studies. In 1909, Post returned to Harvard and earned his Ph.D. His advanced research focused on Spanish writing from the 1400s.
Teaching Career
In 1914, Chandler Post began teaching at Harvard University. He started as an assistant professor, teaching about Greek art and fine arts. By 1934, he became a full professor, holding the important title of William Dorr Boardman professor of Fine Arts.
Notable Students
Many students learned from Professor Post. Some of his well-known students included the famous writer John Dos Passos. Another student, Walter William Spencer Cook, also became an important art historian.
Author and Researcher
Chandler Post was a very active writer and researcher. He wrote many books and articles about art.
Major Book Series
One of his first big projects was History of European and American Sculpture, published in 1921. This was one of the earliest books in America to look at art from different places.
His most famous work is the book series A History of Spanish Painting. This huge project had fourteen volumes and was published over many years, from 1930 to 1953. It was very detailed and covered a lot about Spanish art. The last two books in this series were published after he passed away, with help from Harold Wethey.
Memberships
Post was a respected member of important groups. He belonged to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was also a member of the American Philosophical Society, which is one of the oldest learned societies in the United States.
Later Life
Chandler Rathfon Post passed away on November 2, 1959. He died in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
