Early Life and Career Beginnings
Chanté Adams grew up in Detroit, Michigan. She started acting when she was a student at Cass Technical High School. After high school, she went to Carnegie Mellon University. There, she studied acting at the School of Drama. She earned her bachelor's degree from the university.
After finishing college, Chanté moved to New York. She wanted to start her acting career there.
Big Break in Roxanne Roxanne
Just one month after moving to New York, Chanté got a big chance. She was asked to try out for a movie about the rapper Roxanne Shanté. Chanté got the main role in the movie, which was called Roxanne Roxanne. Filming began very quickly, just eight days later!
Her performance in Roxanne Roxanne was amazing. She won the Special Jury Prize for Breakthrough Performance at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. This award is given to actors who show outstanding talent.
