The Bishop's Chapel (in Spanish: Capilla del Obispo de Madrid) is a special chapel in Madrid, Spain. It was built a long time ago, in the 1500s. This chapel is named after Gutierre de Vargas Carvajal, who was a bishop from a place called Plasencia. He is buried right here in the chapel.

The chapel is right next to the Church of San Andrés. It was first built to hold the remains of San Isidro. San Isidro is a very important person, the patron saint of Madrid. He was originally buried in this very spot.

A Special Resting Place

San Isidro lived a long time ago. His body was found in the late 1200s, about 200 years after he died. Because he was so important, King Alfonso XI gave a special order. He wanted a beautiful wooden box, called an ark, to be built in the San Andrés church. This ark would hold San Isidro's remains. The King also wanted a chapel where people could remember and honor San Isidro.

Later, in the 1700s, San Isidro's remains were moved. They were taken to another important church. This church is called the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo.

Protecting History

The Bishop's Chapel is a very old and important building. In 1931, it was officially recognized as a special historical site. This means it has a "heritage listing." It is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural, which translates to "Property of Cultural Interest." This protection helps make sure the chapel is kept safe for many years to come.
