Chapingo Autonomous University
Chapingo is most famous for being home to the Chapingo Autonomous University (Universidad Autónoma Chapingo). This university, often called UACh, is one of the best places in Mexico to study agriculture. It started as the National School of Agriculture in Mexico City in 1854. In 1923, it moved to its current campus in Chapingo.
Working Together for Agriculture
Chapingo is also very close to other important centers. It's about 3 kilometers (2 miles) from the Colegio de Posgraduados (CP), which is a center for advanced studies. It's also near the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT). These places, along with Chapingo, work together like a team to help farming grow and improve in Mexico. You could call them a "national team for agricultural development."
Students and Scholarships
The University of Chapingo welcomes students from all over Mexico. Every year, students go through an admission process. If they are selected, they not only get to study there but also receive full scholarships. This means they don't have to pay for their education. The university also has rooms and facilities on campus for students to live in. No national student has to pay fees to attend.
A Place of Important Research
The Chapingo Autonomous University has a rich history in agricultural research. In the mid-1940s, the Rockefeller Foundation supported early work here for something called the "Green Revolution." A famous scientist named Norman Borlaug did important research on different types of wheat at the university during this time. Today, the UACh continues to be a key center for new discoveries in farming.
The Surrounding Area
Chapingo is part of a growing urban area near Texcoco, which is the main town in the municipality. Texcoco has a long history and was once the center of the ancient Acolhuan culture. A very famous ruler from this culture was King Nezahualcoyotl. The urban area around Chapingo includes places like Huexotla, the Unidad ISSSTE (a residential area for university staff), Salitreria, and Texcoco itself, which has about 150,000 people.
