Sir Charles Abraham Elton, 6th Baronet (born 31 October 1778 – died 1 June 1853) was an English officer in the British Army. He was also a talented author.

About Sir Charles Abraham Elton

Charles was born in Bristol on 31 October 1778. He was the oldest of three sons of the Rev Sir Abraham Elton, who was the 5th Baronet of the Elton baronets family. His mother was Elizabeth Durbin.

Early Life and Military Career

Charles went to school at Eton. When he was just fifteen, he joined the army. He became an officer in the 48th Regiment of Foot. He quickly rose through the ranks to become a captain.

He also served with the 4th Regiment of Foot. This was during a war in Europe known as the Flanders Campaign. He fought under Frederick, Duke of York. Later, he became a lieutenant-colonel in the Somersetshire Militia.

When his father passed away on 23 February 1842, Charles became the 6th Baronet. This meant he inherited his father's title.

Friends and Politics

Sir Charles was good friends with famous writers. These included Charles Lamb and Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

He was also very interested in politics. He supported the Whig party. This was a major political group in Britain at the time. He spoke publicly to support politicians like Samuel Romilly and John Hobhouse.

Later in his life, Sir Charles lived a more quiet life. He spent a lot of time at his home, Clevedon Court. He passed away in Bath on 1 June 1853.

His Family Life

In 1804, Sir Charles married Sarah Smith. She was the oldest daughter of Joseph Smith, a merchant from Bristol. Together, they had a large family. They had five sons and eight daughters.

Children and Grandchildren

Sadly, their two oldest sons drowned in 1819. This happened while they were swimming near Birnbeck Island in Weston-super-Mare.

Their third son, Arthur Hallam Elton, was born on 19 April 1818. He inherited the baronetcy after his father. He passed away on 14 October 1883.

The fifth son was Rev. Henry George Tierney Elton. He was a vicar in Somerset. He married Georgina Flora Willis and had children. He died in 1905.

Sir Charles's fourth daughter was Laura Mary. She passed away in 1848. She married Charles Samuel Grey. He was a paymaster for government services in Ireland. They had five children together.

His seventh daughter, Mary Elizabeth, became a mother to Charles Isaac Elton. Charles Isaac Elton was a Member of Parliament (M.P.). He also wrote a book called Origins of English History.

The eighth daughter, Jane Octavia, married William Henry Brookfield.

Other Family Connections

Sir Charles also had a sister named Julia Maria. She married Henry Hallam, who was a well-known historian.
