Life and Work

Charles Annibal Fabrot was born in Aix-en-Provence, France. From a young age, he was very good at learning old languages. He also studied different types of law, including civil law (laws for everyday life) and Canon law (church laws).

In 1602, he earned a special degree called a "doctor of law." This meant he was a highly trained legal expert. After that, he became a lawyer, or "avocat," for the high court in Aix, called the "parlement."

A few years later, in 1609, he became a professor at the university in his hometown. This meant he taught law to students.

Fabrot is most famous for translating a huge collection of laws called the Basilika. This was a very important set of laws for the Eastern Roman Empire, also known as the Byzantine Empire. It was like their main rulebook for many years.

His translation of the Basilika was published in Paris in 1647. It was a massive work, filling seven large books! Because of this important work, he received a good payment from a high government official named Pierre Seguier.

Fabrot also helped the study of law by editing the works of another famous legal scholar, Jacques Cujas. He published some of Cujas's writings that had never been seen before. Besides this, Fabrot edited books by historians from the Byzantine Empire. He also wrote his own books about old history and legal topics.

Charles Annibal Fabrot passed away in Paris on January 16, 1659.
