Charles B. Washington was an important American leader. He was born on December 1, 1923, and passed away on April 28, 1986. Charles was a civil rights activist, a journalist, and a mentor. He came from Omaha, Nebraska. He is most famous for his work in North Omaha. He helped people there from the 1940s until he died.

Charles B. Washington's Career

A Young Journalist

Charles Washington started his career early. He was the sports editor for a newspaper called The Omaha Star. He did this before he went to Oakwood College. People said he was the youngest editor of any independent black newspaper in the United States.

In 1944, he also worked for the city. He helped manage softball and baseball teams. Later, he went back to The Omaha Star. He worked there as a reporter. He even interviewed the famous leader Malcolm X for the newspaper. Charles worked at the paper for 48 years as an editor before he retired.

A TV Personality

Charles Washington was also well-known on local television. He hosted a show called Omaha, Can We Do?. This show was supported by the Urban League. It was shown on the local NBC channel, WOWT.

Honoring His Legacy

After Charles Washington passed away, people wanted to remember his important work. On September 14, 1986, a library branch was renamed in his honor. The North Branch of the Omaha Public Library became the Charles B. Washington Branch.
