Charles Bryant (born January 8, 1879 – died August 7, 1948) was a British actor and film director. He was known for his work in both stage plays and early movies.

Life and Career

Charles Bryant was born in Hartford, Cheshire, England, on January 8, 1879. He went to school at Ardingly College in Sussex. When he was 14, he left school to become a stage actor. Just three years later, he moved to the United States. There, he started working on Broadway, which is a famous theater district in New York City. His first big role on Broadway was in a play called The First Born in 1897.

Bryant appeared in several films, including A Train of Incidents (1914) and War Brides (1916). War Brides was the first movie starring his partner, Alla Nazimova. In 1918, Bryant and Nazimova joined Metro Pictures. They acted together in many films, such as Revelation, Out of the Fog, and Billions.

In 1918, Alla Nazimova started her own film company, Nazimova Productions. This is where Charles Bryant began directing movies. He and Nazimova worked together to create a film version of Oscar Wilde’s play Salome in 1923.

Their film partnership did not last long. The movie Salomé was very unusual for its time. It did not do well at the box office and caused Nazimova Productions to go bankrupt. After this, Bryant stopped working in films. He went back to acting on Broadway. He and Nazimova ended their partnership shortly after he left Hollywood.

Family Life

Charles Bryant married Alla Nazimova in 1912. Later, on November 16, 1925, Bryant married Marjorie Gilhooley. He was 43 years old, and Marjorie was 23. Charles and Marjorie divorced in 1936.

Bryant had two children with Marjorie Gilhooley: Charles Bryant Jr. and Sheila Bryant. On June 8, 1948, his daughter Sheila married the American writer Richard Yates.

Later Life and Death

Charles Bryant passed away on August 7, 1948. He was 69 years old. He died in Mount Kisco, New York.
