Colonel Charles Chapman was a military officer in the British Army. He lived in the 1700s. He is remembered for briefly holding a very important job: Commander-in-Chief, India. This meant he was the top military leader for the British forces in India.
Charles Chapman's Military Journey
Charles Chapman studied at Balliol College, Oxford, which is a famous university in England. After his studies, he joined the army.
He served as the commanding officer of the 3rd European Regiment. This regiment was based in Bengal, a region in India.
In December 1773, Colonel Chapman was given a very high position. He became the Commander-in-Chief of the British forces in India. This was a big responsibility.
However, his time in this top leadership role was very short. He stepped down from his position in January 1774. After leaving India, he retired to Bath, a city in England. He passed away in 1795.
