Charles Coote was the son of Charles Coote, 2nd Earl of Mountrath. When his father passed away in 1672, Charles became the 3rd Earl of Mountrath. This meant he inherited his father's title and responsibilities as a peer.

Life and Times

Early Life and Family

Charles Coote was born into a powerful family in Ireland. His mother was Alice Meredyth. Being an Earl meant he was a member of the nobility, with a special place in society and government.

The Williamite War

During the Williamite War in Ireland in 1689, Charles Coote faced a challenge. His family's land, which brought in a lot of money each year (about £2,250), was taken away. This happened because the Patriot Parliament, which supported King James II of England, seized the estates of those who didn't support them.

After the War

After the war ended, things changed for Charles Coote. He was a favorite of King William III of England. Because of this, he was given back his family's land. He also received the estate of another nobleman, Christopher Fleming, 17th Baron Slane, who had lost his lands.

In 1694, Charles Coote was given a special honor. He was chosen to carry the official Banner of the Kingdom of Ireland at the funeral of Queen Mary. This showed how much King William III trusted and respected him.

Political Career

Charles Coote played a big role in the government of Ireland.

Serving the King

In July 1695, he was asked to join the Privy Council of Ireland. This was a group of important advisors to the King. He joined as a supporter of Henry Capell, 1st Baron Capell of Tewkesbury, who was also a key political figure.

From 1696 to 1697, Charles Coote served as one of the Lords Justices of Ireland. The Lords Justices were like temporary governors who ruled Ireland when the King's main representative was not there.

In the Irish Parliament

He was also very active in the Irish House of Lords. This was a part of the Irish Parliament where noblemen made laws. Charles Coote was a member of several important committees. These committees worked on new laws, including some that aimed to change the rights of people who followed the Roman Catholic faith.

Marriage and Children

Charles Coote married Lady Isabella Dormer. She was the youngest daughter of Charles Dormer, 2nd Earl of Carnarvon. Together, they had three sons:

  • Charles
  • Henry
  • Algernon

These sons would later inherit the title of Earl of Mountrath after their father.
