Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Charles Despiau (born November 4, 1874 – died October 28, 1946) was a famous French sculptor. He is known for his beautiful statues and drawings. Despiau created art for over 50 years.

Early Life and Training

Charles-Albert Despiau was born in a town called Mont-de-Marsan, in Landes, France. From a young age, he loved art. He studied at two important art schools in Paris. First, he went to the École des Arts Décoratifs. Later, he attended the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts. These schools taught him how to create sculptures and other art.

Despiau started showing his work in art exhibitions. These shows were called "Salons." He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1898 to 1900. Then, he moved to a different show, the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, where his art was displayed from 1901 to 1921. Finally, he showed his sculptures at the Salon des Tuileries from 1923 to 1944.

His Artistic Journey

In 1907, a very famous sculptor named Auguste Rodin hired Despiau. Rodin was one of the most important artists of his time. Despiau worked as Rodin's assistant, helping him with his sculptures. At the same time, Despiau continued to create his own art. This period lasted until 1914.

In 1914, World War I began. Despiau was called to serve in the army. He worked in a special unit that created camouflage. After the war ended, he returned to his passion: sculpture.

His career really took off in 1927. He had a special art show just for his work at the Brummer Gallery in New York. This show made him very well-known. Charles Despiau passed away in Paris in 1946.

Famous Works and Legacy

Despiau was not a sculptor who made many pieces quickly. He preferred to take his time. He worked on each sculpture for as long as it needed. He wanted to make sure his art was perfect. Sometimes, he would make several plaster versions of a statue. These versions would have only small differences.

One of his most famous works is a bronze statue called Assia. You can find this sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

The largest collection of Despiau's art is in his hometown. It is in Mont-de-Marsan, France. His work is displayed in a museum there. This museum also features the art of another sculptor, Robert Wlérick. Over his 50-year career, Despiau created about 150 sculptures. He also made around 1,000 drawings.
