Charles was a 6-foot-2-inch guard. He played basketball for the University of Washington in college. After college, he joined the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played for six seasons, from 1972 to 1973 and then from 1974 to 1979.

He played for three different NBA teams: the Seattle SuperSonics, the Golden State Warriors, and the Chicago Bulls. A big highlight of his career was winning an NBA Championship with the Golden State Warriors in 1975. During his time in the NBA, he scored an average of 5.3 points per game.
