A Look Back: History of the Garage

Who Was Charles G. Janson?

The Charles G. Janson Garage was built in 1915. It was made for Charles G. Janson, who was a car dealer. He sold Ford cars! Charles Janson was an immigrant from Sweden. He first worked as a blacksmith, making things from metal. Later, he started his own car business.

Changes Over Time

In 1933, more space was added to the original building. This made the garage even bigger. Charles Janson retired in 1937. He sold his car business to Herbert J. Norton from Escanaba, Michigan. But Charles Janson still owned the building itself. He passed away in 1955 when he was 82 years old.

What Does the Garage Look Like?

The Charles G. Janson Garage is a two-story building. It is made of strong brick.

The Original Building

The first part of the building is quite deep. It has a narrow front that faces the street. The roof slopes gently. There are special stepped walls on each side called parapets. The second floor is not very deep. The front of the building has dark red bricks. The other sides are made of yellow bricks.

The front of the garage has a wide entrance in the middle. This was once used for cars to drive in and out. Now, it has a double-door with windows on the sides. There are two big shop windows on either side of this entrance. On the upper floor, there is a large window in the center. It has narrower windows on each side.

The Addition to the Garage

A single-story brick addition is connected to the side of the original building. It is set back from the street. This makes the whole building look like an "L" shape from above. This addition used to have three garage bays for cars. It also had a large window in the front. Today, these garage entrances have been changed into doors.
