Charles Gookin facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Charles Gookin (around 1660–around 1723) was an important leader in early Pennsylvania. He served as a deputy governor, which meant he helped govern the colony on behalf of William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania.

Early Life and Role as Governor

Charles Gookin was a soldier before he became a governor, and he held the rank of colonel. William Penn chose him to be the deputy governor of Pennsylvania. Gookin started his term on February 1, 1709, and served until May 31, 1717. Penn picked him because he seemed wise and thoughtful.

During his time as governor, Gookin faced many challenges. For the first few years, things went smoothly between him and the colonial assembly, which was like a local government. However, after 1714, his time in office became much more difficult.

Challenges and Controversies

Gookin sometimes had disagreements with the assembly and other officials. For example, in 1714, a meeting of the assembly was delayed due to bad weather. This made Gookin very upset, and he acted harshly towards the assembly members when they finally met.

He also made some decisions that caused problems. At one point, he removed several important judges in New Castle County, leaving the area without legal officials for a while. These actions upset many people living in the colony.

His actions led to growing tension. Eventually, in 1717, the colonial council asked for him to be removed from his position, and his term as deputy governor ended.

Family Background

According to one of William Penn's letters, Charles Gookin's grandfather, Sir Vincent Gookin, was an important landowner in Ireland during the time of King James I and King Charles I.
