Charles Henry Gordon-Lennox (born December 30, 1870 – died May 7, 1935) was an important British nobleman and politician. He held several high titles during his life. These included the 8th Duke of Richmond, the 8th Duke of Lennox, and the 3rd Duke of Gordon.

Before he became a Duke, he was known by other titles. From his birth until 1903, people called him Lord Settrington. Then, from 1903 to 1928, he was known as the Earl of March. He was a member of the British Peerage, which means he belonged to a special group of noble families.

A Life of Service

Early Life and Family

Charles Henry Gordon-Lennox was the son of Charles Gordon-Lennox, 7th Duke of Richmond. His mother was Amy Mary Ricardo. She was the daughter of Percy Ricardo.

When Charles Henry was born, his grandfather was still alive. This meant his father was known as the Earl of March. Charles Henry himself was called Lord Settrington at this time. He became the Earl of March in 1903 when his father inherited the Dukedom. He then became the Duke of Richmond in 1928. He held this highest title for only seven years.

His Military Career

Charles Henry Gordon-Lennox had a notable military career. He started as a Captain in the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment. This was a part of the British Army.

In December 1899, he took on a special role. He became an Aide-de-camp to Lord Roberts. Lord Roberts was the Commander-in-Chief of forces in South Africa. This was during the early part of the Second Boer War.

Just before World War I began, he received another promotion. On July 8, 1914, he became a Lieutenant-Colonel. He was put in charge of the Sussex Yeomanry. This shows his dedication to serving his country.
