Early Life and Start in Journalism

Charles Gordon Greene was born in a town called Boscawen, New Hampshire. When he was only eight years old, his father passed away. After this, his older brother, Nathaniel Greene, took care of him. Nathaniel made sure Charles went to school at the Bradford Academy.

After school, Charles started working with his brother. He first joined Nathaniel's office in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Later, he moved to Boston and helped his brother edit a newspaper called the Boston Statesman. This was how he began his career in the newspaper world.

Charles also gained more experience by working at other newspapers. In 1825, he briefly managed and edited the Taunton Free Press. The next year, in 1826, he worked on publishing the Boston Spectator.

On October 24, 1827, Charles married Charlotte Hill in Boston.

Building a Newspaper Career

In 1827, Charles Gordon Greene moved to Philadelphia. There, he teamed up with James A. Jones to start a new newspaper called the National Palladium. This newspaper strongly supported Andrew Jackson when he was running to become president.

After Jackson won the election, Charles worked for the United States Telegraph in Washington, D.C. He then returned to Boston and took over the Boston Statesman from his brother. This meant he became the owner of the newspaper.

A big moment in his career happened in 1831. Charles Gordon Greene started his own newspaper, The Boston Post. He ran this newspaper for a very long time, until 1875. Under his leadership, The Boston Post became a well-known and respected newspaper.

Public Service

Besides his work in journalism, Charles Gordon Greene also served in public office. He was a member of the Massachusetts Legislature. This is like being a representative for the state.

He also held a government job as the naval officer of Boston. He served in this role from 1853 to 1861. This position involved overseeing naval matters in the port of Boston.
