Charles Douglas Richard Hanbury-Tracy, 4th Baron Sudeley (born 3 July 1840 – died 9 December 1922) was an important British politician. He was a member of the Liberal Party. He held the title of Baron Sudeley and was known as The Honourable Charles Hanbury-Tracy before 1877.

In 1886, he served as the Captain of the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen-at-Arms. This was a special role in the government under Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone.

About Lord Sudeley's Life

Charles Douglas Richard Hanbury-Tracy was born on July 3, 1840. His father was Thomas Hanbury-Tracy, 2nd Baron Sudeley. His mother was Emma Eliza Alicia Dawkins-Pennant.

His Time in Politics

Lord Sudeley started his political career in 1863. He was elected to the House of Commons for the area of Montgomery. He kept this seat until 1877. That year, his older brother passed away, and Charles became the 4th Baron Sudeley. This meant he moved from the House of Commons to the House of Lords.

He worked with Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone again. From 1880 to 1885, he was a Lord-in-waiting. This role meant he helped the government manage things in the House of Lords.

In 1886, he became the Captain of the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen-at-Arms. This was a senior position in the government. In the same year, he also joined the Privy Council. This is a group of important advisors to the British monarch.

Besides politics, Lord Sudeley was also a Fellow of the Royal Society. This shows he was interested in science and learning.

Later in his life, Lord Sudeley faced some financial challenges. Because of this, his family home, Toddington Manor, had to be sold in 1893.

His Family

In 1868, Lord Sudeley married Ada Maria Katherine Tollemache. She was a writer.

Lord Sudeley passed away in December 1922 when he was 82 years old. His oldest son, William, then became the next Baron Sudeley.
