Early Life and War Service

When Charles Hartung was thirteen years old, he moved with his family from Germany to the United States. They settled in a town called Two Rivers, Wisconsin.

During the American Civil War, Charles joined the Union Army. He was part of the 5th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He fought in many battles. In one battle, the Battle of Williamsburg, he was seriously wounded. Because of his injury, he had to take a break from fighting. This break was called a furlough.

After he recovered, Charles went back to the war. He became an officer, which means he was a leader for other soldiers. He was part of a large group of soldiers called the Army of the Potomac. He eventually reached the rank of captain, a high position in the army.

After the war ended, Charles moved to Green Bay. In 1866, he married Madalene Bader. They had four children together. Charles Hartung lived in Green Bay until he passed away on July 17, 1916.

Charles Hartung was very involved in his community. He served as the mayor of Green Bay from 1885 to 1887. A mayor is the main leader of a city.

Before becoming mayor, he was an alderman for seven years. An alderman is a member of the city council. They help make important decisions for the city. Many years later, he was elected to the city council again. He served for another eight years, helping Green Bay grow and improve.
