Charles William Frederick Hope, 3rd Marquess of Linlithgow (born April 7, 1912 – died April 7, 1987) was an important British nobleman and a successful businessman. He was also known for his bravery during World War II, where he earned the Military Cross medal.
Early Life and Education
Charles Hope was the son of Victor Hope, 2nd Marquess of Linlithgow. He had an elder twin brother named John Hope, 1st Baron Glendevon.
He attended Ludgrove School and then Eton College, which are both famous schools in England. After that, he studied at Christ Church, Oxford University.
Service in World War II
Charles Hope played a brave part in World War II. He was a member of the 51st (Highland) Division, a well-known military unit.
In 1940, during the Battle of Dunkirk, he was captured by enemy forces. He became a prisoner of war and was held at Colditz Castle. This castle was a high-security prison for Allied officers. He was awarded the Military Cross for his courage during the war.
Life After the War
After the war ended, Charles Hope started a career in finance. He became a director at Eagle Star Insurance, a large insurance company.
He also cared deeply about history and heritage. In 1974, he set up The Hopetoun House Preservation Trust. This trust was created to make sure that Hopetoun House and its lands would be protected for future generations to enjoy.
Family Life
Lord Linlithgow was married two times. His first marriage was to Vivien Kenyon-Slaney in 1939. They had two children together:
- Lady Mary Sarah-Jane Hope (born 1940)
- Adrian John Charles Hope, 4th Marquess of Linlithgow (born 1946)
Vivien died in 1963. Charles Hope then married Judith Lawson in 1965.
He passed away on his 75th birthday in 1987. His son, Adrian, then became the 4th Marquess of Linlithgow.
