Charles James Ruthven Howard (born 1923, died 1994) was an important English nobleman and politician. He was known as the 12th Earl of Carlisle. He also held the title of 12th Lord Ruthven of Freeland. For a time, he was called Viscount Morpeth. He earned the MC, a special award for bravery.

Early Life and Education

Charles was born into a well-known family. His father was George Howard, 11th Earl of Carlisle. His mother was Bridget Monckton, 11th Lady Ruthven of Freeland. He went to a famous school called Eton College. When his father passed away in 1963, Charles became the 12th Earl of Carlisle. Later, in 1982, he also inherited his mother's title, becoming the 12th Lord Ruthven of Freeland.

Family Life

Charles Howard married Ela Helen Aline in 1945. She was the daughter of Wentworth Beaumont, 2nd Viscount Allendale. They had four children together:

  • Lady Jane Howard (born 1947)
  • George William Beaumont Howard (born 1949), who later became the 13th Earl of Carlisle.
  • Lady Emma Howard (born 1952)
  • Hon. Philip Charles Wentworth Howard (born 1963)
