His Early Life and Titles
Charles was born in 1579. He grew up in a time when England was ruled by kings and queens. Being part of a noble family meant he had certain duties and responsibilities.
He started using the title Lord Howard of Effingham in 1615. This was a courtesy title, meaning he was the heir to his father's earldom. When his father died in 1624, Charles officially inherited the title. He then became the 2nd Earl of Nottingham.
His Work in Parliament
Charles Howard was a Member of Parliament five times. A Member of Parliament (MP) is like a representative who helps make laws for the country. He represented different areas:
- Bletchingley in 1597
- Surrey in 1597
- Sussex in 1601 and 1604
- New Shoreham in 1614
In 1603, he was made a knight. This was an honor given by the King. He was also given the important job of Vice-Admiral of Sussex for his entire life. This meant he was in charge of naval matters for the county of Sussex.
His Family Life
Charles Howard was married two times. His first wife was Charity White. They got married on May 19, 1597. Sadly, Charity passed away on December 18, 1618.
He married his second wife, Mary Cokayne, on April 22, 1620. Mary was the daughter of Sir William Cockayne. Sir William was the Lord Mayor of London in 1619.
Charles did not have any children from either of his marriages. Because of this, when he died, his half-brother, Charles Howard, 3rd Earl of Nottingham, became the next Earl.
