Charles Howard, 3rd Earl of Nottingham (born December 25, 1610 – died April 26, 1681) was an important English nobleman. He was the son of Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Nottingham, and his second wife, Margaret Stuart.

Charles went to the University of Oxford for his education. During his time there, he was known for being quite lively and independent. He married Arabella Smith, a lawyer's daughter, which was a decision both families did not fully support at the time.

A Noble Title

Charles Howard became the Earl of Nottingham after his older half-brother, Charles Howard, 2nd Earl of Nottingham, passed away. This meant he inherited a special noble title.

His Marriage and Family

Around 1627, Charles married Arabella Smith. She was described as a very beautiful and charming lady. Her father, Edward Smith, was a barrister (a type of lawyer). Arabella's brother, Sir Edward Smith, later became a very important judge in Ireland. Charles and Arabella did not have any children together.

The End of a Title

When Charles Howard died in 1681, the title of Earl of Nottingham came to an end because he had no children to pass it on to. However, another related title, the Barony of Howard of Effingham, was passed on to Francis Howard, 5th Baron Howard of Effingham.
