Charles IV, Duke of Anjou, also known as Charles of Maine, was an important French noble. He was born in 1446 and passed away on December 10, 1481. Charles was the son of Charles, Count of Maine, a prince from the House of Valois-Anjou, and Isabelle of Luxembourg.
Becoming a Count
When his father died in 1472, Charles became the Count of Maine. He also gained the titles of Count of Guise, Mortain, and Gien. These were all important areas in France.
Becoming a Duke
In 1480, Charles's uncle, René I of Naples, passed away. René had no sons who were still alive. Because of this, Charles became the fourth Duke of Anjou and Count of Provence. This happened according to René's wishes. René's daughter, Yolande, received the County of Bar and was already the Duchess of Lorraine.
Charles also used the title of Duke of Calabria. This title showed his family's claim to the Kingdom of Naples in Italy, which he inherited from his uncle René.
Family Life
In 1474, Charles married Joan of Lorraine. She was the daughter of Frederick II of Vaudémont. Sadly, Joan passed away on January 25, 1480. Charles and Joan did not have any children together.
His Legacy
Charles IV died on December 10, 1481. He decided to leave all his lands and titles to his cousin, Louis XI of France. Because of this, the French kings gained a claim to lands and power in Italy. This led to many important events in the years that followed.
