Charles I d'Albret (born in December 1368 – died October 25, 1415) was a very important French noble. He was the Lord of Albret, which meant he ruled a large area in France. He also held the top military job in France, called the Constable of France, from 1402 to 1411, and again from 1413 until his death. He is well-known for being one of the main commanders of the French army at the famous Battle of Agincourt, where he sadly died fighting against the English forces led by King Henry V.
A French Military Leader
Charles was born into a powerful and old family from Gascony, a region in France. His father was Arnaud, the Lord of Albret, and his mother was Margaret de Bourbon. When he was a young man, he served under a famous French knight named Bertrand du Guesclin. Charles also fought in the battle of Roosebeke.
In 1403, King Charles VI made him the Constable of France. This was like being the commander-in-chief of the entire French army. However, he lost this important job in 1411 when a political group called the Burgundian faction became more powerful at the French court. He got his job back in 1413 when another group, the Armagnac faction, regained power. Charles was a very important person at the French court during his time.
The Battle of Agincourt
In 1415, Charles d'Albret was one of the two main commanders of the French army during the Battle of Agincourt. The other commander was Marshal Boucicaut. Even though they were experienced soldiers, they found it hard to control the many high-ranking French nobles who were also part of the army on the day of the battle.
On October 25, 1415, Constable d'Albret was killed during the Battle of Agincourt. He died fighting against the English troops led by King Henry V. After his death, he was buried at the Friary church in Vieil-Hesdin, France.
