Anne of Armagnac (born 1402, died before March 1473) was an important French noblewoman. She was known as the Dame d'Albret and Countess of Dreux. Anne belonged to the powerful Gascon Armagnac family. This family played a big role in French politics during the Hundred Years War. They were the main rivals of the Burgundians during the Armagnac-Burgundian Civil War. Anne was married to Charles II d'Albret.

Anne's Family and Early Life

Anne was born in 1402 in Gages, a town near Rodez, France. Her father was Bernard VII of Armagnac. He was the Count of Charolais and Count of Armagnac. Her mother was Bonne de Berry.

Anne had six brothers and sisters. These included John IV of Armagnac and Bonne of Armagnac. Bonne later married Charles, Duke of Orléans. Anne also had three half-siblings from her mother's first marriage. One of them was Amadeus VIII of Savoy.

Her grandparents on her father's side were John II of Armagnac and Jeanne de Périgord. Her grandparents on her mother's side were John, Duke of Berry and Jeanne of Armagnac.

The Armagnac Family's Role

Anne's father, Bernard VII, was the leader of the Armagnac party. This group supported the French king and the Orléans family. They were very important in French politics in the early 1400s. Their main enemies were the Burgundians, led by John the Fearless. This rivalry led to the Armagnac-Burgundian Civil War.

On December 30, 1415, Anne's father became the Constable of France. This was a very high military position. He was in charge of the government for the Dauphin Charles. The Dauphin was the future King Charles VII of France. Sadly, on June 12, 1418, her father was killed by angry people in Paris.

Anne died sometime before March 1473. Her husband, Charles, had passed away in 1471. The title of Lord of Albret went to Alain, who was Charles and Anne's grandson. The county of Dreux went to Arnaud Amanieu, another of their sons. However, Alain later took control of Dreux as well.

Anne's Marriage and Children

On October 28, 1417, Anne signed a marriage contract. Less than six months later, on April 23, 1418, she married Charles II d'Albret. He was the Lord of Albret and the Count of Dreux. Charles was born in 1401 and died in 1471.

Charles was the oldest son of Charles d'Albret. His father was also a Constable of France. He had been killed in the famous Battle of Agincourt on October 25, 1415. Charles's mother was Marie de Sully, Princess of Boisbelle.

Anne and Charles had several children together:

  • Jean I d'Albret: He was the Lord of Albret and Viscount of Talvas. He died on January 3, 1468. In 1447, he married Charlotte de Rohan. They had four children. One of their children was Alain I of Albret. Alain's daughter later married Cesare Borgia.
  • Arnaud Amanieu d'Albret: He was the Lord of Orval. He died in 1463. In 1457, he married Isabelle de La Tour d'Auvergne. They had three children. One of their children was Jean d'Albret, Lord of Orval. Jean's daughter was Marie of Albret, Countess of Rethel.
  • Charles d'Albret: He was the Lord of Sainte-Bazielle. He was executed on April 7, 1473. He married Marie d'Astarac.
  • Louis d'Albret: He was born in 1422 and died on September 4, 1465. He became a Cardinal and Bishop of Cahors.
  • Gilles d'Albret: He was the Lord of Castelmoron. He died on August 8, 1479. He married Anne d'Aguillon and they had children.
  • Marie d'Albret: She died after January 4, 1485. On June 11, 1456, she married Charles de Nevers. He was the Count of Nevers and Count of Rethel. They did not have any children.
  • Jeanne II d'Albret: She was the Countess of Dreux. She died on September 20, 1444. In 1442, she married Arthur III, Duke of Brittany. This was his second marriage. They did not have any children.

Later Years and Death

In 1470, records show that Anne owned "a stone for touching the eyes, set in gold." People believed this special stone could help with eye problems. We don't know how or where she got this stone.

Anne died sometime before March 1473.
