Bonne of Berry (born in 1367 – died December 30, 1435) was an important French noblewoman. She became the Countess of Savoy when she married Amadeus VII, Count of Savoy.
After her first husband passed away, she tried to become the ruler (regent) for her young son, but her mother-in-law took that role instead. Bonne was also the niece of King Charles V of France. This made her very important in France's plans to make strong friendships with other kingdoms.
Bonne was the daughter of John, Duke of Berry, and Joanna of Armagnac. Her grandfather was John II of France, who was a king. She was born at the château de Mehun-sur-Yèvre in early 1367. She was named after her grandmother, Bonne of Luxembourg.
Life as Countess of Savoy
Bonne was first promised in marriage to Amadeus VII, Count of Savoy, in 1372. Her uncle, the King of France, gave her a large dowry (money or property given by the bride's family).
Their wedding happened in 1377 with the King present. Bonne moved to Savoy to live with her husband in 1381 when she was 14 years old.
They had three children together:
- Amadeus VIII, Duke of Savoy (1383 – 1439); he married Mary of Burgundy.
- Bonne of Savoy (1388 – 1432); she married Louis of Piedmont.
- Joan of Savoy (born after her father's death in 1392 – 1460); she married Giangiacomo Paleologo.
After her husband, Amadeus, died in 1391, there was a disagreement. Amadeus had chosen his mother, Bonne of Bourbon, to be the regent for their son, Amadeus VIII. A regent is someone who rules when the true ruler is too young.
This caused a conflict between Bonne of Berry and her mother-in-law, Bonne of Bourbon. It almost turned into a civil war! But an agreement was reached in 1393 with help from the King of France. As part of the agreement, Bonne of Bourbon gave some land to Bonne of Berry. After this, Bonne of Berry left her children in Savoy and went back to live in France with her own mother.
Life as Countess of Armagnac
Bonne married a second time to Bernard VII of Armagnac. Their marriage agreement was made in 1393.
They had several children:
- Bonne of Armagnac (1395 – 1435); she married Charles, Duke of Orléans.
- John IV of Armagnac (1396 – 1450); he married two times.
- Marie of Armagnac (1397 – died young).
- Bernard of Armagnac (1400 – 1462), who became Count of Pardiac.
- Anne of Armagnac (1402 – before 1473); she married Charles II of Albret.
- Joan of Armagnac (1403 – died young).
- Beatrice of Armagnac (1406 – died young).
