A Young Count Takes Charge
Amadeus was born in Chambéry on February 24, 1360. His parents were Count Amadeus VI of Savoy and Bonne of Bourbon. When his father passed away in 1383, Amadeus became the new Count. However, he had to share some of his power with his mother, Bonne of Bourbon.
In 1384, Amadeus led his army to help a relative, Edward of Savoy, who was the Bishop of Sion. There was a rebellion against the Bishop in Sion. Amadeus's army attacked and took over the city to stop the revolt.
Expanding the Territory
In 1388, Amadeus made a very important move for the County of Savoy. He gained control of new lands in eastern Provence. He also acquired the important port city of Nice. This was a huge deal because it gave the County of Savoy direct access to the Mediterranean Sea. This meant better trade routes and more power.
A Sudden Death and Family Dispute
Amadeus died on November 1, 1391, after a hunting accident. He got a serious infection called tetanus. After his death, there was a big disagreement about his will.
Amadeus had named his own mother, Bonne of Bourbon, as the guardian for his young son and heir, Amadeus VIII. This was unusual because the tradition was to name the child's mother as guardian. Amadeus's wife, Bonne of Berry, was the daughter of another very powerful duke. Because of this disagreement between his mother and his wife, rumors started that Amadeus had been poisoned. It took three months of talks and negotiations to settle the family dispute and bring peace back.
Amadeus was also known for being very welcoming. He would invite people from all walks of life to his home. He made sure no one ever left his table without a good meal.
Family Life
Amadeus married Bonne of Berry. She was the daughter of John, Duke of Berry, who was the younger brother of King Charles V of France. Amadeus and Bonne had three children:
- Amadeus VIII: He later became known as Antipope Felix V. He married Mary of Burgundy.
- Bonne: She died in 1432. She married Louis of Piedmont.
- Joan: She died in 1460. She married Giangiacomo Paleologo, the marquis of Montferrat.
