Bonne of Luxembourg (born Jutta) was a princess from the House of Luxembourg. She was born on May 20, 1315, and passed away on September 11, 1349. Bonne was the daughter of King John of Bohemia and his wife, Elisabeth. She became the first wife of John II of France, who later became King of France. However, Bonne died before he became king, so she was never a queen. Her original name, Jutta, was changed to Bonne, which means "Good" in French.

Life of Bonne of Luxembourg

Early Life and Betrothals

Bonne was born Jutta, a princess of Bohemia. Her father was King John of Bohemia. When she was very young, she was betrothed to Casimir the Great, who would become King of Poland. But this engagement did not last. Casimir married someone else in 1325.

Later, in 1326, Jutta was betrothed again. This time, it was to Henry IV, Count of Bar. This plan also fell through. She then lived at the Saint-Esprit abbey for a while.

Marriage to John of Normandy

On July 28, 1332, Jutta married John, Duke of Normandy. He was the future King of France. The wedding took place at the Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame, Melun. Bonne was 17 years old, and John was 13.

Her name Jutta was changed to Bonne for her marriage. This name means "Good" in French. After her marriage, Bonne became the Duchess of Normandy. She was also the Countess of Anjou and Maine.

The wedding was a very grand event. About six thousand guests attended. The celebrations lasted for two months. After this, John was knighted in Paris. This ceremony happened at the Notre-Dame Cathedral. Many important people were there. These included the kings of Bohemia and Navarre. Also present were the dukes of Burgundy, Lorraine, and Brabant.

Patron of the Arts and Death

Bonne was known for supporting artists. She loved music and art. One of her favorite composers was Guillaume de Machaut. He was a famous musician and poet.

Sadly, Bonne died young. She passed away on September 11, 1349. She was only 34 years old. She died from the bubonic plague. This was a terrible disease that spread widely at the time. She was buried at the Maubuisson Abbey in France.

Less than six months after Bonne's death, her husband John remarried. He married Joan I, Countess of Auvergne.
