Marie of France (born September 18, 1344 – died October 15, 1404) was a princess from a long time ago. She was the sixth child of John II of France, who was the King of France, and his wife, Bonne of Bohemia.
Marie's Life and Family
In 1364, when Marie was about 20 years old, she married Robert I, Duke of Bar. He was an important noble who ruled a region called Bar.
Marie was a very smart and curious person. She loved to read and had a huge collection of books! Her library was filled with stories, poems, history books, and even books about religion. A famous writer named Jean d'Arras even wrote a special book called Roman de Mélusine just for her.
Marie and Robert had eleven children together. Many of their children grew up to be important people:
- Charles of Bar (died 1392)
- Henry of Bar (died 1397): He sadly passed away from the plague in Italy.
- Philip of Bar (died 1396): He was killed in a big battle called the Battle of Nicopolis.
- Edward III, Duke of Bar (died 1415): He was killed in another famous battle, the Battle of Agincourt.
- John of Bar (died 1415): He also died in the Battle of Agincourt.
- Louis, Duke of Bar (died 1431): He became a bishop and later a Cardinal in the church. He had no children, and his nephew René I of Naples became his heir.
- Marie of Bar: She married William II, Marquis of Namur in 1384.
- Yolande of Bar (around 1365 - 1431): She married John I of Aragon in 1384 and became a queen!
- Bonne of Bar: She married Waleran III of Luxembourg, Count of Ligny in 1393.
- Joanna of Bar (died 1402): She married Theodore II, Marquis of Montferrat in 1393.
- Yolande the Younger of Bar: She was named after her older sister and married Adolf, Duke of Jülich-Berg.
