Isabella of France was a French princess born in 1348. She belonged to the powerful House of Valois, a royal family in France. Isabella became the wife of Gian Galeazzo Visconti. After her death, Gian Galeazzo became the Duke of Milan.
Isabella's Early Life
Isabella was born on October 1, 1348. Her birthplace was the Château de Bois de Vincennes in France. She was the youngest daughter of King John II of France. Her mother was Bonne of Bohemia, the King's first wife.
Her Marriage and Children
Isabella's uncle, Count Amadeus VI of Savoy, helped arrange her marriage. She was to marry Gian Galeazzo Visconti. As part of her marriage agreement, called a dowry, Isabella received the county of Sommières. This was later changed to the county of Vertus.
Isabella and Gian Galeazzo were married in Milan on October 8, 1360. Six months later, in April 1361, Isabella was named the official Countess of Vertus. The couple had four children together:
- Gian Galeazzo, born in 1366
- Azzone, born in 1368, who passed away in 1380
- Valentina, born in Pavia in 1371. She later married Louis I, Duke of Orléans in 1389.
- Carlo, born in 1372
Sadly, only Valentina lived to become an adult. Isabella died in Pavia on September 11, 1372. She passed away while giving birth to her son, Carlo, at the young age of 23.
