Joan of France, also known as Joan or Joanna of Valois, was a French princess who became the Queen of Navarre. She was married to Charles II of Navarre, who was sometimes called The Bad.
Joan was born on June 24, 1343, in Châteauneuf-sur-Loire, France. Her father was John II of France, known as The Good, and her mother was Bonne of Luxembourg. Joan passed away on November 3, 1373, in Évreux.
During her life, Joan played an important role in Navarre. She served as a regent (a temporary ruler) for Navarre when her husband, King Charles II, was away. This happened between 1369 and 1372.
Before her marriage to Charles II, Joan was planned to marry John of Brabant. However, this marriage never took place.
Instead, Joan married Charles the Bad on February 12, 1352. The wedding happened at Chateau du Vivier, near Fontenay-Trésigny in Brie. Charles was the son of Philip III of Navarre and Joan II of Navarre.
Because Joan was still very young when she got married, she stayed in France. She did not move to Navarre until 1360, when she was seventeen years old.
Joan's Role as Queen
At first, Joan's marriage was not very close. However, King Charles II eventually began to trust her more. He gave her a very important job: he made her the regent of Navarre. This meant she would rule the kingdom while he was away fighting in France.
Joan ruled Navarre successfully from 1369 until Charles returned in 1372. She showed great skill in managing the kingdom during his absence.
Joan died in 1373 when she was thirty years old. She was buried in the Royal Abbey of Saint Denis in France, a traditional burial place for French royalty.
Her Children
Joan and Charles II had seven children together. Here are their names and some details about them:
