Sir Charles Arthur Lovatt Evans (born July 8, 1884 – died August 29, 1968) was an important British scientist. He was a physiologist, which means he studied how living things, especially the human body, work. He also held a high position as vice-president of the Royal Society, a famous group for scientists.

Charles Arthur Lovatt Evans was born in Birmingham, England. His father, Charles Evans, was a music teacher who taught piano and violin.

Learning and Early Career

Evans went to the Birmingham Municipal Technical School to start his education. Later, he studied on his own to earn a science degree (B.Sc.) from the University of London.

In 1911, right after his exams, he got a special scholarship. This allowed him to work in the Physiology Department at University College. He was helped by a famous professor named Ernest Starling.

Medical Training and War Service

By 1916, Evans had earned medical degrees from University College Hospital. Soon after, he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps during World War I. His job was to oversee training for soldiers on how to protect themselves from gas attacks.

A Career in Science

After the war ended in 1918, Evans began an important scientific career. He became a professor of physiology and pharmacology at Leeds University. This meant he taught and researched how the body works and how medicines affect it.

In 1919, he moved to become a professor of physiology at St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College. In the same year, he also joined the National Institute for Medical Research. This institute is a major place for scientific discoveries in medicine.

Recognized for His Work

Throughout his life, Sir Charles Arthur Lovatt Evans was recognized for his contributions to science.

In 1911, he became a member of the Physiological Society. This group is for scientists who study the body's functions. He also joined the new Biochemical Society, which focuses on the chemistry of living things.

In 1951, he was honored by the King and became a knight. This is why he is called "Sir" Charles Arthur Lovatt Evans.
