Charles MacCarthy was the son of Dermod MacCarthy from Ballea, a place in Ireland. He was born into a family that was part of Irish history.

His Military Career

In 1678, Charles MacCarthy joined the army. He served in a group called a regiment, which was led by Colonel Thomas Dongan. This regiment was working for King Louis XIV of France at the time.

Later, MacCarthy became a colonel in the Irish Army. This army served King James II of England. A colonel is a high-ranking officer in the military.

A Politician in the Patriot Parliament

In 1689, Charles MacCarthy became a Member of Parliament. This means he was chosen to represent people in a special meeting called the Patriot Parliament. This Parliament was set up by King James II. MacCarthy represented the area of Bandonbridge.

Challenges and Later Life

In 1691, the town of Bandon chose him to be their provost. A provost was like a mayor or a main leader of the town. However, he could not take this job. This was because King James II's side lost a big conflict called the Williamite War in Ireland.

Charles MacCarthy passed away on May 20, 1704. He was buried at Kilcrea Friary.
