Starting as a Pro
Martin became a professional boxer on October 27, 2012. He quickly made a name for himself. In 2013, he fought 11 times! He won many of these fights by knockout. One notable win was against Vincent Thompson, who had never lost a fight before. Martin won by a unanimous decision. He also became the first boxer to stop Joey Dawejko, winning by TKO.
Climbing the Ranks
On April 16, 2014, Charles Martin won his first major title. He beat Alexander Flores to win the WBO–NABO heavyweight title. He defended this title several times.
- In July 2014, he defended it against Kertson Manswell in New York. Martin won by TKO in the third round.
- In February 2015, he defended it against Raphael Zumbano Love in Phoenix, Arizona. He won by TKO in the final round.
- His next defense was in New York against British boxer Tom Dallas. Martin won very quickly, knocking Dallas out in the first round.
- His final defense of the WBO–NABO title was in September 2015. He fought Vicente Sandez and won by knockout in the third round.
Becoming IBF Heavyweight Champion
After another champion gave up his title, the IBF ordered Charles Martin to fight Vyacheslav Glazkov for the vacant world title. This big fight happened on January 16, 2016, in New York.
Martin vs. Glazkov
Martin won the IBF title when Glazkov got injured during the fight. In the third round, Glazkov slipped and hurt his right knee. He tried to continue but fell again, clearly in pain. The fight was stopped, and Martin became the new IBF heavyweight champion.
Martin vs. Joshua
For his first title defense, Martin chose to fight the rising British star, Anthony Joshua. Joshua was an Olympic gold medalist from 2012. The fight took place in London on April 9, 2016.
Joshua started strong and knocked Martin down in the second round. Martin got up, but Joshua knocked him down again moments later. This time, Martin could not get up in time, and the referee stopped the fight. Joshua won the world title. Charles Martin's reign as IBF champion lasted only 85 days. This was the second-shortest reign in heavyweight boxing history.
