Charles Tito Powell, born in 1960, is a historian from both Spain and Britain. He is known for his work on Spanish history. He studied History and Modern Languages at the University of Oxford. His special research project, called a D.Phil. thesis, was about how Spain changed into a democracy. He also worked as a researcher and teacher at different colleges within Oxford University.

Working in Spain

In 1997, Charles Powell moved to Spain. He became a leader at a place called the Ortega y Gasset Foundation, which studies international relations. In 2002, he joined the Elcano Royal Institute. This is a very important group in Spain that thinks about how countries relate to each other. Today, he is the director of this institute.

Since 2002, he has also been a professor of modern Spanish history at the CEU San Pablo University in Madrid. In 2007, he helped start the Fundación Transición Española. This foundation focuses on Spain's move to democracy. He was its first director and is now a vice president.

Books and Research

Charles Powell has written six books and many articles for academic journals. His books explain important parts of Spanish history:

  • El piloto del cambio (1991): This book looks at the role of the king and the royal family in Spain's change to a democracy.
  • Juan Carlos of Spain. Self-made monarch (1996): This is a biography, or life story, of King Juan Carlos of Spain.
  • España en Democracia, 1975-2000 (2001): This book tells the general history of Spain after the death of General Franco. Many people consider it a very important book about that time.
  • El Amigo Americano. España y Estados Unidos: de la dictadura a la democracia (2011): This book explores the relationship between Spain and the United States from 1969 to 1989. It covers the time when Spain was moving from a dictatorship to a democracy.

International Work

Throughout his career, Charles Powell has given talks in more than thirty countries. He has lectured in Europe, North and South America, Africa, and Asia.

Awards and Recognition

In 2017, Charles Powell was given a special award called the Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG). He received this honor for his important work in helping to improve relations between the United Kingdom and Spain.
