Charles Royle, Baron Royle (born January 23, 1896 – died September 30, 1975) was a British businessman and a politician from the Labour Party. He also served as a Justice of the Peace, which means he was a volunteer who helped with local court cases.

Early Life and Education

Charles Royle was the son of another politician named Charles Royle. His mother was Maria Wolfe. He went to school at Stockport Grammar School. During the First World War, he joined the Royal Engineers, which is a part of the army that builds things. After the war, he worked in the business of selling meat.

Political Journey

Charles Royle first joined the Liberal Party and was a leader for young Liberals in Stockport. By 1933, he decided to join the Labour Party instead.

In 1935, he tried to become a Member of Parliament for Lancaster, but he did not win. When the Ministry of Food was created again in 1939, during the Second World War, he became an agent for meat supplies.

After the war ended, he was elected to the British House of Commons for Salford West. This is where laws are made in the UK. In 1942, he became the president of the Manchester and Salford Meat Association.

While he was in the House of Commons, he had important roles:

  • In 1950, he became a Lord of the Treasury. This was a government job that helped manage money.
  • In 1951, he became an opposition whip. A whip helps make sure that members of their party vote together on important issues. He held this job until 1954.

Later Career and Public Service

Charles Royle retired from the House of Commons in 1964. After his retirement, he was given a special title called Baron Royle. This made him a life peer, which meant he could sit in the House of Lords. The House of Lords is another part of the UK Parliament. He was given this title on August 25, 1964. In the House of Lords, he was chosen to be a deputy speaker, helping to lead discussions.

Beyond Parliament, Charles Royle was very active in public service:

  • He was a Justice of the Peace for Brighton.
  • He was a member of the Stockport Borough Council, which is a local government group.
  • He helped lead the Magistrates' Association, a group for Justices of the Peace.

In 1919, Charles Royle married Florence Smith. They had one daughter together.
