Discovering the Charles Shorey House History

Who Was Charles Shorey?

Charles Shorey was born in 1850 in Waterville, Maine. He moved to Washington County, Oregon, in 1878. Charles was a carpenter, which means he was skilled at working with wood.

Building the Family Home

Around 1908, Charles bought some land in Hillsboro. He paid $857 for a piece of land that was once part of the Boscow Dairy Farm. Charles used this land to build a new home for his family.

His family included his wife, Sarah, and their daughter, Eliza Jane. They moved into the new house from their old home near Mountaindale.

The House Through the Years

Charles Shorey lived in the house until he passed away in 1934. His wife, Sarah, passed away a few years later in 1938. Their daughter, Eliza Jane, continued to live in the house.

Eliza Jane took great care of the home. She kept it in excellent condition until she passed away in the 1950s. Later, new owners renovated the house in 1987.

Becoming a Historic Place

By 1989, the Slansky family owned the house. On June 16, 1989, the Charles Shorey House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This honor means the house is important to history. It shows what a typical middle class home looked like in Hillsboro around 1900.

Exploring the House's Design and Details

What Does the House Look Like?

The Charles Shorey House has a unique shape, like a cross. It has a mix of roof styles, including a gambrel roof (which has two different slopes) and a gable roof (a classic triangular roof).

Queen Anne Style Features

The house is mostly built in the Queen Anne style. This style was popular around the time the house was built. It also has some features of the Colonial Revival style, which was another popular design.

Outside the House

The outside of the house is made of horizontal wood siding. You can also see some cool "fish-scale" shingles, which look like fish scales. There's a porch that wraps around part of the house.

The porch has decorative accents like "jigsawn brackets" and "turned-posts." These are fancy wooden decorations that add to the house's charm. Many of the original materials are still there, even the old lead windows!

Inside the House

The inside of the house is also very original. The main stairway still has its "turned balusters," which are decorative posts. Most of the home has "fir wainscot," which is a type of wood paneling on the lower part of the walls. The interior design follows the Arts and Crafts style. This style focuses on simple, handmade beauty.
