Who Was Charles MacAlester?
Charles Somerville MacAlester was born on September 15, 1797. He was the oldest son of Charles MacAlester and Janet Somerville. His mother's family, the Somervilles, were from a place called Kennox.
His Life and Family
In January 1828, Charles MacAlester married Mary Adeline Brabazon Lyon. Mary was the daughter of Captain Edward Lyon.
Charles was a busy man. He became a Deputy Lieutenant of Ayrshire, which meant he helped the Lord-Lieutenant of the county. He was also a Justice of the Peace for Ayrshire, helping to keep law and order. In the military, he reached the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Ayr and Wigton Militia. This was a local military force.
Becoming a Clan Chief
In 1846, Charles MacAlester was officially recognized as the Chief of Clan MacAlister. This special right was given to him by the Lyon Court, which is the official authority in Scotland for things like coats of arms and clan chiefs. Being a clan chief meant he was the recognized head of his family and its history.
His Later Years
Charles Somerville MacAlester passed away on January 6, 1891. He was buried in Warriston Cemetery in Scotland. His son, also named Charles, took over as the Chief of Clan MacAlister after his father's death.
