Early Life and Family Home

Charles Stewart was born in August 1746. His birthplace was Traquair House, a historic home located near Peebles in Scotland. He was the only son of John Stewart, who was the 6th Earl of Traquair.

Becoming an Earl

When his father passed away in 1779, Charles inherited the family home, Traquair House. He also took on the title of the 7th Earl of Traquair. This meant he became the head of his noble family.

Joining Important Societies

In 1798, Charles Stewart was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This is a very old and respected group in Scotland. Its members are often scientists, thinkers, and important people who have contributed a lot to knowledge. Being a Fellow meant he was recognized for his standing and contributions. He passed away at Traquair House on October 14, 1827.

Family Life

Marriage and Children

In August 1773, Charles Stewart married Mary Ravenscroft. She was the second daughter of George Ravenscroft. Her family lived at Wykeham Hall in Lincolnshire, England. Mary passed away in 1796.

Charles and Mary had two children together:

  • Charles Stewart, who later became the 8th Earl of Traquair (1781-1861).
  • The Honourable Louisa Stewart (1776-1875).
