One way into the cave used to be through the cellar of an old bakery. Inside, explorers would find a large, clear pool of water. This pool was about 25 feet (7.6 meters) wide! A big part of the cave actually runs right under the building known today as the Old Opera House.

Discovering Charles Town Cave

The Charles Town Cave was found by accident in 1906. Imagine just digging and suddenly finding a hidden cave! After its discovery, people thought it would be a great place for visitors.

A Show Cave for Visitors

In the late 1920s and early 1930s, the cave was opened to the public. It became a "show cave," which means it was set up for people to explore and enjoy. Visitors could come and see the amazing underground formations and the clear water pool.

What's Inside the Cave?

The cave is made of a type of rock called Elbrook Limestone. This kind of rock is often found in areas with caves. It's relatively easy to explore, which made it suitable for visitors when it was a show cave.

Water in the Cave

The large pool of water was a main feature of Charles Town Cave. However, in 1997, scientists checked the water. They found that it was not as clean as it should be. This showed that the water had some pollution in it.
