Broadway Debut
In 1957, Tyner first appeared on Broadway in a play called Orpheus Descending. Two years later, he acted alongside the famous actor Paul Newman in another Broadway play, Sweet Bird of Youth.

Tyner made his first movie appearance in 1959. It was a small, uncredited part in the film That Kind of Woman.
Memorable Movie Parts
He became well-known for his roles in several movies. One of his most remembered parts was with Burt Reynolds in the 1974 comedy The Longest Yard. He also played the character Gus, a motel owner, in the movie Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
Later Career and Final Role
Tyner returned to the stage in 1977, but he kept acting in movies and on television often. His very last appearance on screen was in a short film called Lucidia in 2014. Charles Tyner passed away on November 8, 2017.
