Charles Van Acker (born March 14, 1912, in Brussels, Belgium – died May 31, 1998, in Grand Blanc, Michigan, U.S.) was a Belgian-American racing driver. He was known for competing in American Championship Car races. These races were very popular in the United States. He also tried to race in the famous Indianapolis 500 several times.

Early Racing Years
Charles Van Acker began his racing career in the mid-1940s. His first attempt to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 was in 1946. However, his car was not fast enough to make it into the main race.
Indianapolis 500 Adventures
In 1947, Charles successfully qualified for the Indianapolis 500. This was a big achievement! Sadly, his race ended early when he crashed on lap 24. He finished in 29th place. Even with the crash, he continued to race that season. He competed in seven more national trail races. He ended up finishing 4th in the overall points standings for the year. This showed he was a talented driver.
The next year, 1948, was better for him at Indy. He finished 11th in the Indianapolis 500. He also placed 10th in the National Championship. In 1949, he faced another challenge at Indy. He crashed just 10 laps into the race. He also found it hard to qualify for other races that season. His last attempt at the Indianapolis 500 was in 1950. He failed to qualify, and this was his final Championship Car race.
Life Outside the Racetrack
Charles Van Acker was not just a driver. He also owned and ran the South Bend Motor Speedway in South Bend, Indiana. This shows his deep love for racing.
A Close Call with News
One time, after a dirt track crash in Dayton, Ohio, news reports said he had died. This was a very serious mistake! Charles Van Acker later said that the reports were "exaggerated." He claimed he was not that seriously injured. This story became a famous part of his racing history.
