Charles de Téligny (around 1535–24 August 1572) was a French soldier and a diplomat. A diplomat is someone who helps countries or groups talk to each other to solve problems peacefully.

Who Was Charles de Téligny?

Charles de Téligny came from a respected Huguenot family in a region of France called Rouergue. Huguenots were French Protestants, a group of Christians who followed the teachings of the Reformation. He received excellent training in both learning and military skills. This training happened at the home of Gaspard de Coligny, a very important Huguenot leader.

Working for Peace

Charles de Téligny was often sent on important missions to help create peace. He spoke for the Protestants to the king of France. In 1567, he was trusted by Prince Condé, another Protestant leader, to share his ideas with the queen mother, Catherine. The next year, he helped at a meeting in Châlons. He also signed the Peace of Longjumeau, which was an agreement meant to end a war. However, this peace did not last very long.

A Soldier's Role

When war broke out again, Charles de Téligny joined the fighting. He helped in the siege of Poitiers, which means his side tried to take control of the city. He also led an attack on Nantes, but it was not successful. He fought bravely alongside Coligny at the battle of Moncontour. Later, he helped with the talks that led to another peace agreement, the Peace of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, signed on August 8, 1570.

His Final Years

In 1571, Charles de Téligny moved to La Rochelle and married Louise de Coligny, who was Gaspard de Coligny's daughter. But he was soon called back to Paris. He worked on a special group that included people from both sides to help settle disagreements.

Even though he became a favorite of King Charles IX, he faced a tragic end. He was among the first people to die during the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre. This was a terrible event where many Protestants were killed in Paris. Charles de Téligny was killed in the Louvre palace because he would not give up his Protestant beliefs.
