Charlesburg (sometimes spelled Charlesburgh) is a small, unincorporated community in Calumet County, Wisconsin, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a group of homes and businesses that doesn't have its own local government, but is part of a larger town, in this case, Brothertown.

History of Charlesburg

Charlesburg was first settled in 1855. The very first person to settle there was likely Anton Reinl. He was an immigrant from a place called Bohemia, which was part of the Austrian Empire at that time. Other early settlers included Raymond Lodes, Joseph Nadler, and Joseph Fisher. These early residents spoke a type of German language.

A very important building in Charlesburg was the St. Charles Church. This Catholic church first opened its doors in 1866. It served the community for many years before closing in 2005.

Where is Charlesburg?

You can find Charlesburg on St. Charles Road, right where it meets Washington Road. It's considered part of a special area in southern Calumet County known as the Holyland region. This area got its nickname because many of the early settlers were Catholic immigrants who built many churches.
