Charleston, Ottawa County, Michigan facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Charleston was once a small settlement, or village, located in Allendale Township, in Ottawa County, Michigan. It started a long time ago as a place where people could trade goods with the local Native American communities. This trading post was built in 1810 by a man named Pierre Constant.

The Beginning of Charleston

Charleston began its life as a trading post. A trading post is like a special shop or meeting place where people can exchange goods. In this case, it was a place where early settlers and traders could swap items with the local Native American tribes.

Who Was Pierre Constant?

The person who set up this important trading post was Pierre Constant. He was a French trader, known for being brave and honorable. In 1810, he worked for the British Fur Company, which had a big trading center in a place called Mackinaw.

Pierre Constant traveled along the shore of Lake Michigan with his supplies. He then set up his trading post on the Grand River, right near where Charleston would later be. He also created another trading post on the banks of Muskegon Lake. These posts were very important for trading furs and other goods in the early days of Michigan.

The Village of Charleston

Charleston wasn't just a trading post for long. In 1836, the area was officially "platted." This means that a map was drawn up, dividing the land into lots for houses and streets, planning it out like a proper village.

However, Charleston's time as a village didn't last forever. In 1872, a sawmill that was important to the village was removed. After this, the village slowly stopped existing. Today, Charleston is no longer a populated place, but its history tells us about the early days of settlement in Michigan.
