Charlestown is a small place in New Jersey, USA. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city on its own. Instead, it's part of a larger area called Bethlehem Township.

Charlestown is located in Hunterdon County. You can find it off County Route 635. It's about 1.5 miles southwest of a town called Hampton.

A Look Back: Charlestown's Early Days

Charlestown has a simple but interesting past. By the year 1881, it was a small but active place.

What Was Charlestown Like in 1881?

In 1881, the community of Charlestown had a few important features:

  • It had its own school, where local children learned.
  • There was a wheelwright shop. A wheelwright was a person who made and repaired wheels for wagons and carts.
  • A blacksmith shop was also present. Blacksmiths worked with metal, making tools and repairing items.
  • The community had about twelve homes, or "dwellings," where people lived.

This shows that Charlestown was a small, self-sufficient community in the late 1800s. People lived and worked there, supporting each other with essential services.
